Matilda’s Death By Chocolate Cake

Now, if you’re like me, you loved watching classic movies as a kid and imagining what the iconic foods on the screen could taste like. One of my absolute favorite movies was Matilda. I’ll never forget how amazing that chocolate cake looked. Now, as an adult baker, I decided it was time to develop a recipe that would satisfy all those cravings inspired by that movie.

So, here’s my Matilda-inspired  “Death-by-Chocolate” Cake recipe. Once you’re done, it’ll look just like the one from the film. And taste even better than you imagined.

Can somebody explain to me why the food in movies looks so amazing if they’re not gonna show you a recipe to make at home? Growing up, I loved watching the Matilda movie, but that beautiful chocolate cake would always give me the meanest food envy. Like, why wouldn’t they share the recipe!?

Keep It Simple:

By now, we all are very well aware of the fact I am a LAZY baker! Emphasis on that laziness because trust me when I say, I like simple things. Thankfully, this chocolate cake is extremely easy to make and does not require much!

When something is as delicious as this cake, you want it asap. So, we recommend using chocolate cake mix however be sure it is high quality so that you get the best results possible. Nobody wants a dry cake! If you are struggling to find a good one, use code “MATILDA” to save and give our premium and all-natural cake mix a try. It won’t disappoint and that’s a fact!

What makes this cake “Death by Chocolate” is the creamy, smooth, decadent ganache based frosting. Ganache is absolutely divine! To get such a perfect one, you NEED an immersion blender. This blender will help you combine the chocolate and cream to get that glossy and smooth texture with no effort. I make ganache almost every week, and ever since I used this blender I see and taste a difference.

After rewatching the movie recently, I decided that ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH! It was time to develop a cake recipe that’ll look just like the one from the film. And I was determined to make it taste just as good (if not better) as the one that had Matilda ravenous. When you finish making this cake, you’ll have an incredibly moist, extra-rich cake with the most beautiful, reflective, glossy chocolate fudge frosting. And this recipe is so easy to follow, you’ll want to make this at least three times a week.

Death By Chocolate Cake

What you will need:

  • 3 8-inch chocolate cakes baked and cooled. We suggest using our EJB Chocolate Cake Mix to make them, but any cake mix can work. Use Code “MATILDA” to save!

Frosting:

  • 2 cups heavy cream

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup corn syrup

  • 4 cups semi-sweet chocolate (I like to use Nestle or Ghirardelli

  • 1 stick of butter

  • ¼ tsp of salt

  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract

Making the frosting:

  1. Combine the heavy cream, sugar, corn syrup, and salt in a saucepan. Bring the saucepan to a boil over medium-high heat. Make sure you are mixing constantly to ensure the sugar is dissolved.

  2. Remove the pan from the heat and pour the chocolate chips into the mix. Once fully dissolved, allow the mixture to sit for about 2 minutes.

  3. Grab an immersion blender and blend until completely smooth and glossy.

  4. Add in the Vanilla extract and continue to mix in with the immersion blender.

  5. Cover the mixture with plastic wrap and let cool for about an hour. The texture should be at a thick and spreadable consistency. If necessary, let cool for longer until the desired texture is achieved.

Assemble:

  1. Ensure your cakes are super cold (frozen is better!) before you frost them. Grab one layer and use a dollop of a generous scoop of the chocolate filling and then go to town.

  2. Continue this process until all cakes are used!

  3. Generously frost the outside of the cake using the remaining frosting and decorate however you wish! We wanted to go for the rustic “homemade” look like the one from Matilda, so we kept it simple. But feel free to let your creativity shine through!

  4. If you use frozen cake layers, make sure to wait a few hours before eating the cake. It should be at room temperature for the best results!
